Between January and March 2026, SourceGrid conducted structured interviews with 312 D2C founders and sourcing professionals across 14 categories and 8 cities. The goal: understand how Indian D2C brands actually source raw materials, where the worst friction is, and what they'd pay to fix it.
Key Finding #1: WhatsApp Is the Primary Sourcing Channel
67% of founders listed 'WhatsApp group referrals' as their primary method of finding new suppliers. The next closest was IndiaMART at 48%. Tradeshows (Plastivision, PackagingIndia) were cited by 31%. Only 12% had used a structured digital marketplace in the past year.
Key Finding #2: Packaging Problems Are Universal
Across every category — food, fashion, health, home — packaging sourcing was cited as the #1 procurement pain point. The reasons were consistent: finding verified suppliers at appropriate MOQs, understanding sustainable materials, and managing quality consistency across batches.
Key Finding #3: Trust Is the Bottleneck
- 78% said they'd placed an order to a supplier they found online, and received materially different quality than the sample.
- 62% said they'd been ghosted by a supplier after placing a paid advance.
- Only 23% had ever checked a supplier's GST registration independently.
Key Finding #4: Founders Will Pay for Speed
When asked 'Would you pay a monthly subscription for a platform that guaranteed you'd find a shortlist of 5 qualified, GST-verified suppliers in your category within 24 hours?', 71% of buyers said yes. Average stated willingness-to-pay was ₹999–₹2,999/month.
Our most surprising finding: 81% of suppliers said they would prefer NOT to pay for leads upfront — they'd rather pay a small platform fee after a connection resulted in a purchase order. The current IndiaMART prepay model is deeply unpopular.
