Every marketplace in history has made the same promise at launch: 'we'll never charge you commissions.' Amazon told sellers this in 2000. IndiaMART offered free listings until it built network effects. The pattern is: acquire users on zero-commission, then raise fees once you're indispensable.
We intend to break this pattern — not because we're idealistic, but because we think there's a better economic model available for a vertical marketplace in 2026.
How SourceGrid Plans to Make Money Without Commissions
- Premium supplier tools: Analytics dashboards showing which categories are trending, which buyers viewed your listing, and how your response rate compares to competitors. Suppliers who want this intelligence pay a monthly subscription.
- Verification-as-a-service: We've built a verification pipeline for GST and MSME. Suppliers who want expedited verification (24 hours vs. 5 days) pay for it.
- Demand intelligence reports: Monthly reports for large suppliers on what D2C brands are actively sourcing — category breakdowns, budget ranges, location clusters. Data that used to require a market research firm.
- Finance & logistics partnerships: Commission arrangements with logistics providers and trade finance companies when they close deals that originate from SourceGrid referrals — paid by the service provider, not the user.
The key insight: buyers and suppliers are not our customers — our customers are the companies that want access to this concentrated, high-intent supply chain network. The buyers and suppliers are the product we curate.
The Math on Zero-Commission at Scale
At 5,000 suppliers on a premium plan at ₹2,999/month, SourceGrid generates ~₹15 crore in annual recurring revenue — without charging a single rupee on any transaction. That's the model. It requires building genuine utility for suppliers first, which is why we're willing to be free at launch.
